Why do we write?

Some say it is because we are passionate about telling stories. Others say that we do it to get out of ourselves what hurts us. I think I do it to understand myself: to structure all the chaos inside me.

Everyone has their reason for writing.

We writers are like snowflakes: no two are alike.

There are night writers and early morning writers. Some writers only write when the inspiration comes, and others do it every day as if it were a job.

At a conference, Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa shared that Juan Carlos Onetti asked him one day about his writing process. And when he began to explain his creative process, Onetti told him to shut up and said that he only wanted to know if he wrote by hand or by typewriter.

Mario replied that he wrote with a typewriter. And Onetti, listening to him, said,

“You don’t know what you’re missing.”

For Onetti, there was something magical about writing by hand. Get ink on his hands. Feel the pressure of the pen on the paper, crossing out what he didn’t like. For him, writing was a fetishistic act.
