In the Bible, Lot's wife became a pillar of salt after looking back as she escaped from Sodom with her family.

This to me is the perfect parable to exemplify what happens when we become attached to the past. God (the universe) only exists in the eternal present. The past and the future only generates pain. And the past can turn you into a pillar of salt :-)
