Reality is what happens outside but affects us inside.

We transform external events into internal sensory experiences. Here are some examples,

  • External event: being in the middle of a traffic jam.
Internal event: fear of being fired for being late for work.
  • External event: your partner comes home late.
Internal event: panic that your partner is with someone else.
  • External event: falling to the ground on a busy street.
Internal event: feeling ashamed of what those people who saw us fall to the ground will think.

In all cases, the external event is what actually happens. And the internal event is what makes us feel what happens.

The problem is that what we feel most of the time does not correspond to reality.

  1. Being in a traffic jam does not mean that we are going to be fired.
  2. Your partner being late doesn’t mean they are cheating on you.
  3. Being seen stumbling is not a cause for mockery.

What’s more,

When you are late for work, you don’t get fired.
When your partner comes home late, it’s for a good reason.
And when someone sees you…
