I think mental flexibility has a lot to do with plasticity. The older you are, the more likely you are to have your personality crystallized. That's why it's so difficult to change bad habits as you get older. But if you focus on improving brain plasticity, meditating, playing chess, learning a new language, you can increase your flexibility and adapt to new challenges.
