I think the key was that he was dropping one habit at a time. It was clear to me that there is always like a master bad habit that reproduces itself in everything you do. And I detected that it was the compulsion: it manifested itself in alcohol, in the craving to eat, in tobacco.
And I started quitting tobacco, and when I was able to control the compulsion with cigarettes, I started to use that strategy for the rest of the bad habits, since all of them are rooted in that compulsion.
The process has been slow, almost a decade. But it can be overcome with patience and perseverance.
