They’d lived that beautiful idealized version of the F. Scott Fitzgerald lifestyle to the hilt, then carried on after that. Oh, you’d never know they were drunk. That would be a major social faux pas. I saw it, but it was so normalized I never thought about it. Same thing, to a great degree, for my parent's generation. I admit, they had a true sense of style…

It happened to me too. I was an alcoholic for more than a decade, but I didn't realize it, because in Spain, drinking was not frowned upon.
