What I think Epictetus means is that we stop treating the things we care about as objects, and focus on relating to them.

Examples,

Focus on being a good person, so when you lose your friends, it won't hurt so much, because you'll know you're doing your part, ergo more friends will come.

Don't get attached to your job, focus on being diligent in your work, so when you lose any job, you will apply that diligence to any new job you get.

In the family, don't see them as YOURS, because they are not, focus on being a good parent, child, husband, wife, etc.

Ergo what Epiteto proposes with his phrase, is that we have to stop trying to control and own everything and everyone and focus on BEING the best we can and flow with people and life situations.
