“Cabin Fever” is a term coined in the early 1900s in the United States to define the state of a person after exposure to long periods of isolation.

The first adventurers who dared to colonize the vast territories of North America and Canada called it “Prairie Madness.”

It is that feeling of loneliness from being isolated from the rest of society.

The Minnesota study

In 1980 a study was conducted by Dr. Rosenblatt in Minnesota where people spent long winters isolated in their homes.

He concluded that the inhabitants frequently shared the following symptoms: depression, insomnia, restlessness, and irritability, and the study subjects also increased their consumption of alcoholic beverages.

In turn, another study group adapted to loneliness by preferring isolation to social contact.
